Graphic Fonts & DTP Fonts
These are the fonts used by our DTP packages (such as
Devkey) and printed on the Laser printers. The same
fonts may be converted to graphic format and used on the web pages.
The advantage in this case is that you can get very accurate text sizing, can freely mix
other images, etc. You do not require the Web fonts to do this.
The disadvantage in using graphic images are two: Firstly, preparation of the images
like this is a time consuming process and not easily alterable. Secondly, the graphic
images take a lot of time to load. You can use these if there are only a few simple
pages, but it quickly becomes tedius to create & download these pages. Web site
response will be slow.
Graphic Font Samples:
These are the dynamic fonts - which means the web site viewers don't have to
download and install these fonts. The Netscape browsers (versions later than 4.0)
have the built-in capability to show these; while for Internet Explorer (versions later
than 4.0) will ask once a permission to automatically download and install an OCX.
If you have loaded any dynamic fonts once, this control is present on that
machine and there is no need to load it ever again!
The advantage is that the users don't have to download fonts and install them,
and that the pages load very fast. If your site has more than one/ two pages in
a regional language, this is the way to go. Also, only the characters used on a web
page are automatically downloaded, thus, saving the time further.
The disadvantage in this case is one time installation on your site. Also, the current
versions (5.x) of browsers, specially IE is not able to 'justify' paragraphs using the
regional languages - due to conjunct characters. It is expected that this shortcoming
will be rectified as browsers become more intelligent.
Web Font Samples:
Note that the web font pages load much more faster, hence, we have provided many
more pages using web fonts.
DTP fonts in other languages
We have recently released quite a few Devanagari fonts and also fonts in other
scripts. Specifically, Bengali and Kannada fonts have been released. Samples of
those fonts will appear soon on this site.
